Netflix’s first original African animated series “Supa Group 4” debuted on Thursday in a debut its maker said she trusted would prepare for additional productions from the continent.
The eight-section series is set in a futuristic version of Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, and recounts the tale of four female teen superheroes who are determined to save their city.
Malenga Mulendema, Zambian essayist and creator of the series, says that she trusts the series kicks things off for additional African stories to be told on platforms like Netflix.
In a statement, Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema told AFP, “I’m excited that the world finally gets to see the fantastic show that the incredibly talented super team, from Africa and beyond, have put together.”
“We hope ‘Supa Team 4’… will lead to further investment and collaboration so we can continue to grow the industry.”
Malenga Mulendema made the series subsequent to becoming one of the champs of a skillet Africa ability search by liveliness organization Triggerfish and Disney.
Mulendema stated that she set the story in her home country to “illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero” when the show premiered in 2019.
Zambian rapper, vocalist and lyricist, Sampa the Incomparable, has likewise loaned her voice to the series, singing the show’s theme song.
“Animation series shaped our childhoods and to know young Zambians get to see what they’ve never seen on TV before is amazing!” she posted on Instagram.
Netflix has wagered on expanding its creation outside the US lately, scoring enormous with series including Spanish crush “Cash Heist” and South Korean tragic show “Squid Game”.
In April, the firm said it wanted to grow tasks in Africa and give “more African storytellers an amplified voice on the global stage”.
The series will be available in English and Zulu.
