The Philadelphia Eagles’ win on Monday night was historic in one regard, even though it may not have been as convincing as some fans had wanted.
With a score of 25-11, the Eagles defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That was the first game in the NFL’s more than 16,000-game history to have the exact score it did at the finish. This phenomena is now referred described as “scorigami.”
According to a 2016 video by journalist and filmmaker Jon Bois, the term refers to “the art of building final scores that have never happened before in NFL history.” There is a Twitter account with more than 400,000 followers that tracks which ongoing games have the highest likelihood of ending in scorigami as well as notifying fans when scorigami occurs.
The Eagles have taken part in 81 games that have ended in scorigami, which ranks eighth in NFL history. In these contests, they had a 34-46-1 record. Since 2001, the Birds’ fortunes have improved, as they have won nine of the 12 scorigami matches in which they took part.
Already, 2023 appears to be an important year for scorigami. Only four games in 2022 ended in scorigami, while three have already occurred in 2023. Even though the Miami Dolphins’ 70-20 shellacking of the Denver Broncos on Monday night was an unusual score, it wasn’t the first game this week.
Over the course of ten full seasons from 2013 to 2022, the league played an average of around seven Scorigami games year. The biggest scorigami season in the previous 50 years was 1998, when 17 games had different final scores.
