Tata Motors also announced their plans to release petrol-powered versions of these two SUVs in the future months along with the pricing for the brand-new, significantly revised versions of the Harrier and Safari. Following the unveiling of the new Harrier and Safari, representatives from Tata Motors revealed that these SUVs would come with a petrol engine option, which is expected to be ready in 2024.
Tata Motors debuted a brand-new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine at Auto Expo 2023 for the first time. This engine can produce a maximum of 170 PS of power and a maximum of 280 Nm of torque in its most powerful form. This turbocharged petrol engine looks to be a good fit for both SUVs given the size and positioning of the Harrier and Safari in the Indian auto market.
The 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that powers the Nexon at the moment is another option offered by Tata Motors. It has 120 PS of power. However, the Harrier and Safari might find this engine to be underpowered. Tata Harrier and Safari’s decision to offer a petrol engine option makes sense given that many of their immediate rivals – Mahindra Scorpio-N, Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector, and Hyundai Alcazar – also have this choice. There are petrol engine options for even smaller midsize SUVs, such the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, MG Astor, Honda Elevate, and Citroen C3 Aircross.
Currently, only diesel engine options are available
Currently, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine from the previous models remains the only available powertrain for the completely redesigned Tata Harrier and Safari. This diesel engine, which is sourced from Fiat, comes in 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission options and has a maximum output of 170 PS and 350 Nm of torque. Additionally, same engine is used in the Jeep Compass, which has a 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic transmission, as well as the MG Hector with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The new Harrier and Safari will only be offered with the 2.0-litre diesel engine as a powertrain choice until the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine from Tata Motors is made available. Both SUVs have been updated on the outside, and new interior arrangements, features, and color schemes have been added. With expected price rises in the upcoming weeks, the Harrier and Safari were initially priced at Rs. 15.49 lakh and Rs. 16.19 lakh, respectively, at the time of their launches.
