The highest-paid player for the Arizona Diamondbacks will not be playing in the 2023 World Series.
Prior to the 2020 season, Madison Bumgarner agreed to a five-year, $85 million contract with the D-backs.
On April 20, this year, the 33-year-old Bumgarner was designated for assignment after recording a 10.26 ERA in 4 starts for Arizona.
MadBum, who will earn $23 million in 2023, is the highest-paid player on the Diamondbacks even though he is not on the team.
Second baseman Ketel Marte has the second-highest payroll on the team, bringing in $11.6 million this year.
Bumgarner and Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy were teammates with the San Francisco Giants, so they have a deep bond.
According to report, the former World Series MVP made a playful offer to toe the rubber for his former manager one more when he reached out to Bochy ahead of the Rangers’ Game 7 matchup with the Houston Astros.
“In the hours before another Game 7 for Bruce Bochy today, he got a text from Madison Bumgarner, offering to pitch,” Olney stated.
Together with Bochy, Bumgarner won three World Series in San Francisco.
