You can stream some of the best horror films available on Hulu, even if it’s not the most popular streaming service. Given that this collection essentially has everything a horror enthusiast could want, it appears that the Hulu team took Huluween very seriously while creating it.
Two indie horror films, a Stephen King adaption that was originally produced for Hulu, and two films directed by horror guru James Wan round out our selections. This Halloween, these are the top five Hulu movies to watch.
The Boogeyman (2023)
The Boogeyman, a Stephen King adaption, was once intended to be released exclusively on Hulu. Rather, it was released in theatres before being made available on Hulu. King’s original novella was so brief that the movie significantly alters and expands upon it. In this version, Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) claims to Will Harper (Chris Messina), his therapist, that an inexplicably evil creature killed his entire family.
Shortly after Lester’s passing, the creature seems to have moved on to Will and his family, who are still grieving the death of Will’s wife. Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), Will’s youngest daughter, is the first to identify “the Boogeyman” in their home. However, Sadie (Sophie Thatcher), her older sister, also comes into contact with this evil energy very soon.
Saw (2004)
Saw, the film that launched director James Wan into stardom in Hollywood, has inspired nine sequels to date. However, one of the reasons the first movie is still the greatest is that the plot is far more restrained than in any of the follow-ups. Starring beside a stranger named Adam (Leigh Whannell) in a wrecked bathroom, tied to a wall, is Cary Elwes as Dr Lawrence Gordon, a husband and father.
Gordon discovers that Tobin Bell, aka the Jigsaw Killer, is responsible for this and that he was previously a suspect in the case. At this point, Jigsaw is risking Gordon’s family’s life in a game. Gordon has only a few hours to release himself from his bonds in order to kill Adam, which will allow him to save them.
Malignant (2021)
In addition, Wan directed the underrated horror movie Malignant, which wasn’t intended to become a series. Madison Mitchell, played by Annabelle Wallis, is a young woman who is pregnant and has experienced miscarriages in the past. Following a violent attack by her husband, Derek Mitchell (Jake Abel), Madison dreams about someone breaking in and killing him.
Madison finds out upon waking that Derek’s death was not a dream and that the murderer is still present in the house with her. After the encounter, Madison loses her baby, but she quickly learns that she is somehow connected to the killer as he continues to kill. She also can’t run from him forever.
The Babadook (2014)
Put all of the funny memes of The Babadook out of your mind. The beast from the first movie is nothing to giggle at. In The Babadook, Essie Davis plays Australian widow Amelia Vanek, who is fighting to raise her son Samuel Vanek (Noah Wiseman). Even in ideal conditions, that would have been challenging. However, things get more harder when Samuel starts to fear The Babadook, a terrifying figure from one of his tales.
Is it a character instead? Because Amelia grows more and more certain that The Babadook is real and that it is targeting her son as she learns more about it.
The Vigil (2019)
For just a few hundred dollars, would you stay up all night watching over a dead body? In The Vigil, Dave Davis plays Yakov Ronen, who makes that deal even after he has left the Orthodox Jewish community. In order to keep evil spirits at bay until Rubin Litvak (Ronald Cohen), a Holocaust survivor, can be buried, Yakov promises to be his Shomer.
Though it might seem like simple money, Yakov is going to discover that the Jewish stories about evil spirits aren’t really stories. When Rubin was young, he came across an unfathomable horror; now, that creature is returning and searching for a new host. Our choice for the scariest Hulu film is The Vigil, which you might want to watch with the lights on.
