The Tata Group is hard at work expanding its Hosur-based iPhone-casing operation, hoping to double the current plant’s footprint. With an investment of Rs. 5,000 crore and spanning 500 acres, the modern Hosur facility is home to more over 15,000 workers. It is anticipated that after the expansion, the workforce will increase significantly to 25,000–28,000 workers.
Apple and Strategic Partnership
Apple chose Tata Electronics as its supplier to produce iPhone casings in a calculated attempt to expand its manufacturing outside of China. According to The Economic Times, Tata Electronics plans to greatly expand its capacity for high-end electronic contract production and accessories. Notably, the business just bought the iPhone production plant owned by Wistron.
According to a source quoted by the newspaper, “The new facility could be entirely dedicated to Apple phone components, but the possibility of manufacturing components for other high-end phones of different companies cannot be ruled out.”
A government official said that while the new plant might just produce parts for Apple phones, it might also be used to produce parts for other high-end phones made by different manufacturers.
In May of this year, Tata Electronics started looking for further land close to its current electronics manufacturing site in Hosur. An industry expert has verified that a sizable plant dedicated to making phone components has been established in Hosur.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, expressed enthusiasm about the Indian market during an earnings call earlier this month. He also mentioned the company’s all-time record sales for the June-September period. “We see an extraordinary market- a lot of people moving into the middle class,” Cook said, underlining India’s potential.
Breaking Records for Sales in India
According to a recent Counterpoint analysis, Apple’s sales in India increased significantly from June to September, with a 34 percent year-over-year growth. Apple shipped more than 2.5 million iPhones during this quarter, making it the best quarter ever, according to Shubham Singh, a research analyst at Counterpoint.
