The Virginia Tech Hokies and the Valparaiso Beacons will meet at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET. The timing is certainly in Virginia Tech’s favour as the team has won four straight games at home, while Valparaiso has suffered three straight road losses.
Va. Tech didn’t let the past stop them on Sunday, given their recent poor performance against Louisville (2-7 in their previous nine games). The Hokies defeated the Cardinals with a final score of 75-68.
MJ Collins, who scored 20 points, is largely responsible for Virginia Tech’s victory. Lynn Kidd was another player who made a difference, scoring with 19 points.
The Beacons, the meantime, trailed the Chippewas 71-67 on Wednesday, but they were never able to get closer.
Valparaiso lost, but not before a few players stepped up to the challenge and make some impressive plays. Isaiah Stafford was possibly the greatest of all with a total of 23 points. In the last three games he’s played, Stafford has beaten his prior point total, showing his ongoing dominance. Along with his 12 rebounds and 6 points, Kaspar Sepp also contributed to the team’s success.
With this win, the Hokies improved to 6-3 on the season. The Beacons are currently 4-5 and have a losing record.
In this competition, the quantity of possessions is probably going to play a major role: With an average of 33.8 rebounds per game this season, Virginia Tech has been slamming the glass. Valparaiso has been even better at 37.7 per game, so it’s not like they struggle there. It will be interesting to watch how their conflict develops given these opposing strengths. After the action, return here for a thorough review and analysis of the competition.
