Season 3 of Christopher Storer’s highly praised FX comedy The Bear is in the works, one month after the show dominated the Emmys with ten wins.
John Landgraf, Chairman of FX Content and FX Productions, provided an update on The Bear’s advance and revealed the release schedule for upcoming episodes during an executive session on February 9 at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 winter tour.
Landgraf informed TCA members that “The Bear returns exclusively to Hulu in June” with fresh episodes. Season 3 was expected to debut sometime in 2024. In case viewers are curious about when Season 3 will be available, Landgraf clarified that The Bear’s binge-style distribution strategy from its first two seasons is probably going will likely remain going forward.
“We all watched the first season and it wasn’t lost on me or anyone else who worked on the show that it’s a little anxiety inducing to watch that show, and anxiety inducing are not the adjectives typically associated with hit television shows and Emmy awards. So we made a decision that we would drop the whole thing because for those of you who saw it, it has a really beautiful, very uplifting ending,” he explained.
“When we came back for Season 2, we debated, since we knew now that we had a hit, can we milk it a little bit? Can we roll it out over weeks? More Bear is better? We then thought that’s a rotten thing to do, to change it up for the audience. The way that Chris makes it, even though the episodes are separate, there’s a whole vibe to every season so we decided not to change what we had already set in motion and I have no doubt that we’ll keep doing it because we did it in the past. Even if we could, I don’t think we’d change it now,” Landgraf added.
It was expected that The Bear would receive an official Season 3 renewal in November 2023, given that FX and Hulu had reported a “70% increase in total hours streamed in the first four days” following the broadcast of Season 2. After its premiere, the second season hit the Nielsen Top 10 streaming chart. FX and Hulu, which are owned by Disney, announced that “Season 2’s premiere was the most-watched premiere of any FX series on Hulu,” but they did not provide exact viewership figures. The Bear’s first season was “the most-watched single season of a comedy series in FX history,” according to Hulu.
Richard “Richie” Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri), Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), and the rest of their culinary staff were followed in The Bear Season 2 as they attempted to turn their sandwich store into a Michelin-starred restaurant. They set out on own paths of self-improvement and self-discovery along the road, which culminated in a emotional, eventful finale. The Bear stars Abby Elliott, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Matty Matheson, Molly Gordon, Edwin Lee Gibson, Oliver Platt, and others in addition to the Emmy-winning actors mentioned above.
