The Destiny creator is now a part of the Sony world. According to tweets from both Bungie and PlayStation Studios, Sony Interactive Entertainment officially closed on a $3.6 billion transaction today to acquire the independent gaming company and publisher Bungie.
In line with the acquisition’s conditions, Bungie will continue to exercise independent creative control over its business activities. Bungie will be regarded as an independent subsidiary of Sony, and won’t be obliged to produce either current or future games exclusively for PlayStation systems, as leaders from both companies have noted since the transaction was announced in January.
According to report, Sony is hoping that Bungie’s experience with titles like Destiny would enable it to increase the number of live service games it offers. According to Sony CEO Jim Ryan, the business intends to spend 55% of the PlayStation budget on live service games by 2025. Before March 2026, PlayStation intends to release 10 live service games, and Sony thinks Bungie’s support will be essential to this goal.
This Monday, Sony finalised a deal to buy Montreal-based Haven Studios, which is developing a multiplayer PlayStation game. Furthermore, Sony is far from done. According to Ryan, the company intends to purchase many additional studios over the following few years in an effort to expand its live service and PC products. On the Xbox front, Activision Blizzard’s acquisition by Microsoft for $68.7 billion is anticipated to complete next summer.
