The Google Doodle of today honours Labor Day in United States. The government holiday honors the enormous contributions that working people have made to society as well as their achievements and hard labour.
Many Americans worked long hours seven days a week during the Industrial Revolution in order to make a living. As a result, workers established labour and trade organisations to fight for their rights, which marked the beginning of the labour movement. They protested the hazardous working conditions, scant breaks, and low pay through strikes and demonstrations.
The holiday was first observed in the United States in the late 19th century, while the labour movement was gaining ground there. For the first unofficial Labor Day celebration, hundreds of workers congregated in Union Square in New York City on September 5, 1892, where the Central Labor Union arranged a parade. In 1894, the United States government officially declared the first Monday in September as a federal holiday after the Union Square parade sparked a number of regional celebrations.
Today, people celebrate the holiday with parties, outings, and vacations. The three-day weekend serves as a final opportunity for relaxation before the summer closes while also serving as a poignant reminder of how far our nation has advanced workers’ rights. Humans are grateful to all labour activists from the past and present for raising the standard of living in our country!
To all, a happy Labor Day!
