Another significant milestone has been reached for the animated film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” just over a month after its impressive opening weekend at the box office.
On Sunday, the film made $1 billion worldwide, and according to a Universal news release, it continues to break box office records while remaining at No. 1 spot for the fourth weekend in a row.
The 10th animated film to reach $1 billion, “Super Mario Bros.” surpasses “Minions: The Rise of the Gru,” earned in 2019 which made $942.5 million, to become the 10th biggest animated film worldwide.
The movie debuted on April 5 in the United States and Canada, earning over $200 million domestically and nearly $380 million internationally during its five-day opening run. Marvel’s “Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was no match for Super Mario Bros. Quantumania” at the time, which opened in February and earned $225,3 million worldwide.
Chris Pratt portrays Mario, Charlie Day portrays Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy portrays Princess Peach in the movie, which is based on the world of the classic Nintendo video game series “Super Mario.”
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” follows Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi as they’re transported down a mysterious pipe while working underground to fix a water main. The brothers wander into a “magical new world” and when they’re separated, “Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi,” according to a synopsis on the movie’s website.
Jack Dark, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson and Sebastian Maniscalco balance the cast, with an exceptional appearance by entertainer Charles Martinet who is the authority voice of Mario in the computer games.
