The Portugal Day celebrates in today’s Doodle is called Dia de Cames, de Portugal e das Comunidades Portuguesas (Day of Cames, Portugal, and the Portuguese Communities). Instead of commemorating the day that Portugal declared independence from Spain, it celebrates National Day on a day that honors the influential Portuguese poet Lus de Cames. The artwork in today’s Doodle is inspired by traditional Portuguese tiles in honor of the nation.
Os Lusadas (The Lusiads), his epic poem, is regarded as a significant piece of literature. It describes Portuguese explorations and voyages in the 15th and 16th centuries. Rumors have spread far and wide suggesting that on one of Camões’ own experiences, a boat sank and he swam one-gave to shore, holding the sonnet over the water with his other hand.
In 1880, the first Portugal Day celebration was held, and in 1919, it became a national holiday. Every year, a different Portuguese city hosts official celebrations that include parades of military troops, baton twirlers, and marching bands. As night falls, fireworks and patriotic music are played by orchestras. In addition, another official celebration was recently held in a foreign city to include Portuguese communities from all over the world in the celebration of Portugal’s history, culture, and accomplishments.
Happy National Day, Portugal!
