A new Harry Potter TV series is reportedly on the way to HBO

It would appear that the time has come to tell the boy wizard’s story once more, just a little over a decade after the release of the final Harry Potter movie. Lucas Shaw of Bloomberg reports that HBO is getting closer to signing a deal to revive J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series as a new television show.

According to the report, each of the series’ novels would be turned into a season of television. The TV seasons would give the series more time to explore the books’ Wizarding World without having to cut anything out like the original movies, which started in 2001 with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

This strategy is part of an effort by HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, to revive some of its most popular brands. This tactic began a few months ago with the announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be taking over DC Studios. It continued a few weeks later with news of remade Lord of the Rings movies that will bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic books to the big screen for the first time in 20 years.

The Harry Potter universe is still very popular, and the video game Hogwarts Legacy, which came out in February, was a huge hit. However, the creator of the series is still in hot water because of her comments about trans people. According to a Bloomberg report, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and HBO CEO Casey Bloys had to persuade the author to allow the company to produce the new series, which would air on HBO and online. No word yet on how involved Rowling would be with this new series.
