Kia has introduced the PV5, the first model under its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) initiative, aimed at transforming commercial mobility. Unveiled at the 2025 Kia EV Day in Tarragona, Spain, on February 28, this mid-sized Car Derived Van (CDV) is designed to cater to a range of applications, from passenger transport to cargo delivery and specialized chassis conversions. Built on Kia’s E-GMP.S platform, an advanced battery-electric skateboard architecture, the PV5 supports multiple body configurations to accommodate diverse mobility needs. The initial launch will include Passenger, Cargo, and Chassis Cab variants, with additional specialized conversion models set to follow.
Kia President and CEO Ho Sung Song emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainable mobility, combining an efficient electric powertrain with a highly adaptable architecture. The PBV strategy integrates advancements in product development, manufacturing, and software. The E-GMP.S platform’s Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) standardizes critical components such as batteries and motors, optimizing efficiency and reducing production complexity. Kia’s Flexible Body System further enhances adaptability, enabling tailored configurations to meet varying customer demands. The PV5 lineup will include standard models such as Passenger, Cargo, and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, alongside conversion options like Crew, Drop Side, and Freezer Box. Production will take place at a specialized EVO Plant, featuring a hybrid system of conveyor and cell-based manufacturing. A dedicated conversion center will handle custom modifications, all backed by Kia’s comprehensive warranty coverage.
On the software front, the PV5 integrates an infotainment system powered by Android Automotive OS, offering enhanced functionality for business users. A collaboration with Samsung Electronics brings SmartThings Pro IoT integration, ensuring seamless connectivity between PBVs and workplace IoT environments. The Passenger variant boasts a flexible three-row seating arrangement, optimized through Kia’s partnership with Uber for ride-sharing applications. Meanwhile, the Cargo variant, available in Standard, Long, and High-roof configurations, provides up to 5.1 cubic meters of cargo space, accommodating two Euro pallets. Practical design elements such as a low step height, an optional L-track mounting system for securing cargo, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability for powering tools further enhance its utility. The Chassis Cab model serves as a foundation for specialized applications, incorporating a flat rear structure with reinforced protective elements for secure cargo mounting.
The PV5 range extends to include a Crew model equipped with integrated cargo security features and a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) with side-entry access and a universal wheelchair belt fastening system. Powering these variants are battery options that include 43.3 kWh LFP, 51.5 kWh NCM, and 71.2 kWh NCM configurations, paired with a 120 kW front motor delivering 250 Nm of torque. A cell-to-pack battery system eliminates traditional modules, maximizing energy efficiency. The Passenger variant, when equipped with the 71.2 kWh battery, offers a range of up to 400 km, while fast-charging technology enables a 10% to 80% charge within 30 minutes.
Designed under Kia’s “Opposites United” philosophy, the PV5 features a sleek upper body paired with a robust lower section, highlighted by signature lighting within the A-pillar, black geometric wheel arch claddings, and interchangeable bumper corners. Interior color themes draw inspiration from nature, with choices such as Deep Navy, Dove Gray, Espresso Brown, Terracotta Brown, and Iceberg Green, while the exterior palette includes Soft Mint Gloss, Lakehouse Gray Gloss, Frost Blue Gloss, and the Korea-exclusive Steel Gray Matte. The interior adopts an open-box layout with modular storage solutions and Kia’s AddGear system, allowing for easy customization with accessories. Key technology features include a 7-inch instrument cluster, a 12.9-inch navigation screen, Digital Key 2.0, and support for over-the-air updates. The PV5 is scheduled for launch in Korea and Europe in the latter half of 2025, with global expansion planned for 2026. Production of conversion models will commence between 2025 and 2026, with pre-orders opening for Korean and European customers in early 2025.
