Eli Roth, the director, is coming back for more “Thanksgiving.” He is currently working on a follow-up to his holiday-themed slasher movie, which is scheduled to hit theatres in 2025. It’s unclear which actors, if any, will make a comeback.
“BEEAKING NEWS! John Carver will kill again!” Using the name of the movie’s villain as a caption, the director posted a video to Instagram. “Thank you everyone who supported ORIGINAL HORROR in theaters!!! Go see it now on the big screen while it’s in cinemas, sequel set for release in 2025! Taking a year to really get the script right, working on it starting today!”
“Thanksgiving” opened to $10 million in North America earlier in November and has now made $30 million worldwide, albeit this isn’t quite a blockbuster performance. However, Sony’s TriStar Pictures, which supported the first movie, must feel justified in coming back to terrorise the people of Plymouth, Mass., given that the film’s production cost $15 million.
The inspiration for “Thanksgiving” stemmed from an iconic 16-year-old fake trailer that Roth made for the double feature “Grindhouse,” starring Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. The ultimate full-length movie, starring Patrick Dempsey and Addison Rae from TikTok, is about a mysterious, axe-wielding killer who terrorises a small community after a Black Friday riot turns tragic. It received a respectable “B-” CinemaScore—a regular rating for the horror genre—but an unexpectedly high 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Along with Roger Birnbaum, Roth and Jeff Rendell created the screenplay and produced it.
Director of scary films like “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel,” “The Green Inferno,” and “Knock Knock,” Roth is a fixture of the horror genre. In addition, he directed the PG family picture “The House With a Clock In Its Walls,” starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett, and the 2018 version of “Death Wish,” starring Bruce Willis.
