Recently, Facebook users have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with a sudden and unexpected change to the app’s iPhone icon, which momentarily featured a new black and blue design. This abrupt alteration led to considerable confusion and frustration among users, who were accustomed to the app’s traditional aesthetic. However, it has now been confirmed that this change was merely the result of a technical glitch, and Facebook is taking steps to rectify the situation.
According to a report by Business Insider, the unexpected shift in Facebook’s icon was attributed to a “technical issue” rather than any intentional rebranding or redesign. Dave Arnold, a communications manager at Meta, provided clarification, stating, “This was caused by a technical issue and has been resolved. Users will see the corrected icon once they update their app.” The glitch had caused the icon to display a black background with a blue logo, deviating from Facebook’s familiar blue and white color scheme. This deviation caused a significant amount of discontent among users who had grown accustomed to the classic design.
The timing of this issue coincided with the release of iOS 18, which includes new icon theming options such as a system setting that darkens all Home Screen icons. Interestingly, this bug also affected users on iOS 17, leading to a variety of icon appearances, including a version with a white background and a blue logo. It remains uncertain whether these alternative icon designs will make a return when Facebook releases its update for iOS 18 next month.
For those eager to resolve this issue, the updated version of the Facebook app, which now includes the corrected icon, is available for download from the App Store. With the technical glitch addressed, users can now enjoy a more consistent experience and proceed with their long weekend without further disruptions.
