Tuesday saw the birth of Adira River Ohanian, the second daughter of tennis legend Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian.
Nearly a year after her final tennis match before retiring and leaving the court, Williams made the announcement on Instagram. The celebrities that offered their congratulations to Williams and her family on the new arrival included Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Viola Davis, Naomi Osaka, and Ciara.
“I’m grateful to report our house is teaming with love: a happy & healthy newborn girl and happy & healthy mama. Feeling grateful. @serenawilliams you’ve now given me another incomparable gift — you’re the GMOAT. Thanks to all the amazing medical staff who took care of my wife & our daughter,” Ohanian wrote on X, the company formerly known as Twitter.
Williams and Ohanian only recently made the gender of their second child public.
Williams revealed that she was expecting her second child at the May Met Gala.
“Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.
She admitted in an essay published in Vogue last year that starting a family was one of the main reasons she left professional tennis after winning 23 Grand Slam titles.
“Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family,” she wrote. “I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”
