Google has officially stepped into the higher education space by offering a compelling deal for college students in the U.S., making its advanced AI tools more accessible than ever. Beginning today, eligible students can sign up for the Google One AI Premium plan completely free of charge-a subscription that normally costs $20 per month. This offer will remain valid until June 30, 2026, giving students over a year of complimentary access to some of Google’s most powerful AI-driven resources. To take advantage of the offer, students must register before the cutoff date of June 30, 2025. Google spokesperson Alex Joseph clarified to The Verge that signups will require verification through a legitimate .edu email address. As the free subscription period nears its end, Google plans to notify users in advance, giving them ample time to cancel or consider continuing with a paid subscription if they choose to. This initiative is part of Google’s strategy to help students “study smarter” by integrating AI tools into their academic workflow. With the One AI Premium plan, users receive 2TB of cloud storage along with access to a suite of Gemini 2.5 Pro-powered tools, including Gemini Advanced-Google’s direct answer to ChatGPT Plus. The plan also features Deep Research functionality, designed to simplify and summarize complex academic topics, as well as convert written material into audio formats similar to educational podcasts. In addition, the subscription includes NotebookLM Plus for enhanced note-taking and content comprehension, along with full integration of the Gemini AI assistant into productivity apps such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Students can also experiment with newer creative tools, like the Veo 2 text-to-video generator and Whisk, which allows the blending of textual and visual prompts to generate fresh content. As AI continues to transform the education landscape, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have also launched their own student-focused initiatives. By introducing this plan, Google aims to not only support academic success but also cement its presence in a vital and rapidly evolving sector, especially as AI technology poses growing challenges to traditional search engines.
