In festival of U.S. Hispanic Heritage Month, the present Doodle—showed by Riverside, California-based guest artist Loris Lora—respects Panamanian-American medical attendant and instructor Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde. As a foundational figure in the making of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), Dr. Murillo-Rohde committed her life to enhancing the quality of healthcare for underrepresented communities while equipping other Hispanic nurses with the abilities to do likewise. Ildaura Murillo was born on September 6, 1920, in Panama into a family of health professionals. In 1945, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she found that somewhat not many of the city's nurses represented the linguistic and ethnic backgrounds of their generally Hispanic patients. Realizing that language barriers and cultural mannerisms regularly held up traffic of giving patients the best of care, Murillo-Rohde set out on a deep rooted mission to develop a nursing labor force that could best serve America's developing Hispanic community. Subsequent to procuring her doctorate from New York University in 1971, Dr. Murillo-Rohde took different places that permitted her to unmistakably recognize the underrepresentation of marginalized groups in the medical community as a public issue. To battle this issue, she helped tracked down the Spanish Speaking/Spanish Surnamed Nurses' Caucus in 1975—presently known as the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN)— and filled in as its first president. Close by proceeded with work with the NAHN, Dr. Murillo-Rohde advanced cultural awareness as a psychiatric nurse, faculty member, professor, and dean. The American Academy of Nursing honored her various achievements with its esteemed association—one of the greatest nursing honors in the country. Today, the NAHN offers help for Hispanic nurses through different projects, including the Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Scholarship. It additionally honors members who have displayed remarkable achievements in nursing education, examination, and practice with the Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Award for Education Excellence by a Hispanic Registered Nurse.
