Google's Gemini app is getting a significant upgrade with a new extension that enables it to play and search for music through Spotify. This enhancement, powered by the Gemini AI assistant, is available on compatible Android devices and allows users to link their Spotify accounts to their Google accounts. By giving the virtual assistant a song, album, artist, playlist, or even a mood or activity, users can request that the virtual assistant play music. However, accessing certain features, such as playing specific songs, will require a Spotify Premium subscription. On its support page, Google shared details about this highly anticipated feature, which arrives six months after Gemini gained similar integration with YouTube Music. If users connect both Spotify and YouTube Music to their accounts but do not specify which service they want to use, the assistant will default to the one most recently used. However, this extension is limited in scope, as it does not function on Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the iOS version. For the feature to work, users must set their Gemini app to the English language and enable Gemini Apps Activity. The AI assistant offers various ways to interact with Spotify. Users can request specific songs, albums, or playlists, search for music based on an artist's name or lyrics, and find playlists tailored to genres, moods, or activities. However, the extension currently does not support creating Spotify playlists or stations. To set up the integration, users need to log into their Spotify accounts and link them to their Google accounts. Once connected, they can activate the feature by opening the Gemini app, accessing their profile settings, and toggling the Spotify option under the Extensions section. Although Google has started rolling out this update, it may take up to two weeks before it becomes accessible to all users worldwide.
