Apple announced on Wednesday that Apple Maps is now available in public beta on the web. Which mean you can now access the service directly through your browser. The introduction puts Apple Maps in direct competition with Google Maps, which has long been available on the web.
Maps on the web is available in English and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, and Chrome and Edge on Windows PC. Apple plans to add support for other languages, browsers, and platforms in the future.
Apple Maps on the web works the same as the mobile app. You can get driving and walking directions, order food from Maps, and browse featured guides and reviews. Apple plans to integrate additional features into the web version in the coming months, such as a “Look Around” feature that displays a 360-degree panoramic view.
Apple said developers can link to maps on the web to allow users to get directions and view detailed location information.
The launch of the web version of Apple Maps comes 12 years after Apple introduced the service on the iPhone. By expanding the availability of Apple Maps, the company aims to reach more users and compete with Google Maps, which has become the primary source of maps on the web.
