The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake on Netflix has been in the works for five years, and it is getting closer to hitting theatres. You get our first glimpse at the characters and important scenes in a brand-new minute-and-a-half teaser from Netflix. And, finally—drum roll, please—we know when the release will happen: February 22, 2024.
All that Netflix revealed to the audience at the June event was a brief 37-second teaser that featured the symbols of the four nations—Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads—as well as the news that the show would premiere in 2024.
The actors of Avatar: The Last Airbender talked about special moments during filming, like haircut day, at the time, but now we can see their metamorphosis in person. Gordon Cormier plays Aang, Kiawentiio plays Katara, Daniel Dae Kim plays Fire Lord Ozai, and Ian Ousley plays Sokka in the group.
Questions about how the upcoming series will compare to the first persist despite a closer examination of it. Co-creators of the first Avatar: The Last Airbender, Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, abandoned the project back in 2020. “I realized I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded,” DiMartino said at the time. “So, I chose to leave the project. It was the hardest professional decision I’ve ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity.” He added that the show had “potential” but wouldn’t align with his vision for it.
