Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning filmmaker of Parasite, is back on the road with Mickey 17.
Warner Bros. stated on Wednesday that the film’s release date will be pushed back from January 31, 2025 to April 18, 2025. Mickey 17 will be released in Imax theaters worldwide.
The announcement comes one day after Lionsgate announced that their Michael Jackson biopic Michael will be delayed from April 18 to October 3, 2025. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua. Premium large-format screens are increasingly important to a film’s earnings and are therefore in high demand.
“When the April 18 date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for Mickey 17. We’re thrilled with the new date, and very happy the film will be available to audiences in IMAX,” a studio spokesperson said in a statement.
Robert Pattinson stars in an adaption of Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7. In the novel, Mickey 7 is a space colonist who is considered expendable. (In actuality, he is the sixth incarnation of a man called Mickey Barnes.) Each colony has an expendable, a crewmember who takes on dangerous tasks but is then reconstituted through clone bodies when they die. Ashton released the followup, Antimatter Blues, last year.
With Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo also included, director Bong is anticipated to add his own distinctive twist to the original material. Producing under the umbrella of Offscreen, Inc. are Bong and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company, in collaboration with Plan B Entertainment.
Warner Bros. and New Line announced a joint decision to postpone Companion’s January 10, 2025, release date to January 31, 2025. Why? Once more, it will have access to Imax screens worldwide.
