Amazon Drive is closing down, which is bad news for the (likely small) number of users who have relied on it to store their crucial information in the cloud. The good news is that you have well over a year to find a replacement and have everything shifted over.
According to the company, support for Amazon Drive will end on December 31, 2023. Access will be entirely blocked off at that point. As of January 31st, uploads will no longer be accepted and will disappear early. On October 31st, 2022, the Android and iOS Amazon Drive apps will be deactivated.
According to an email from Amazon to users, “We will continue to provide customers the ability to safely back up, share, and organize photos and videos with Amazon Photos.” You must download any files that aren’t pictures or movies though. If you’re attempting to retrieve larger files, Amazon advises utilising the Amazon Photos desktop programme for Windows or macOS on its FAQ page. You can also cancel your Drive subscription by going to this page.
After 11 years, Amazon has decided to shut down Drive, citing the need to “We are taking the opportunity to more fully focus our efforts on Amazon Photos to provide customers a dedicated solution for photos and video storage.” That would imply that Amazon has big plans to compete with Apple’s iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos. Nevertheless, people who grew accustomed to storing their files on Amazon’s trustworthy servers will undoubtedly be disappointed by the Drive news.
