Jason Kelce isn’t going to call it a career.
In a video posted on Twitter on Thursday, the Eagles centre announced his return to the league for his 12th season.
“Got a lot of questions on the air yesterday about my future,” Kelce says in the video. “So I decided I’d clear it up right now. Unfortunately, I’ve decided to announce that I’m retiring from hosting WIP. But I’m definitely not retiring from playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. I’m having way too much fun doing that. Looking forward to another year, Philadelphia. To all my teammates, let’s go dominate .”
A keg, which you assume was ordered by Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and sent to Kelce’s home in an attempt to persuade him to return in 2022, was featured prominently in the announcement video. The pour was awful, with far too much foam in it, which ended up in Kelce’s beard, but the rest of the announcement was great news for Eagles fans.
Kelce, 34, has been a stalwart for the Eagles since his arrival in 2011. He has started every regular-season game in all but two of his 11 NFL seasons. He’s been selected to five Pro Bowls and four first-team All-Pro teams in his career, which he’s spent solely with the Eagles, and he helped the team win its first Super Bowl in 2017. Kelce followed up that win by starring in the Eagles’ victory parade, complete with a regal costume surpassed only by his hoarse, passionate speech, as Eagles fans would gladly tell you.
During the Eagles’ rocky transition, which included the trade of their franchise quarterback Carson Wentz, Kelce proved to be a key leader. With Kelce leading the way for the younger Eagles, including second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia stunned many by securing a playoff place in 2021 before losing on Super Wild Card Weekend to the reigning champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In 2022, the Eagles will look to build on their previous success. They’ll be ecstatic to see Kelce return to his former role as seasoned leader.
