Variety reported that Chucky has been canceled after three seasons.
The horror-comedy series debuted on Syfy and USA Network. Two installments of Season 3 were broadcast, the first in October 2023 and the second in April and May 2024. There had been talks, reportedly unsuccessfully, about bringing the show back for an abbreviated final season or possibly a wrap-up movie.
“I’m heartbroken over the news that ‘Chucky’ won’t be coming back for a fourth season, but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” series creator Don Mancini said in a statement. “I’d like to thank UCP/SYFY/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew (the best in the business), and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS come back.”
“Chucky” continues the “Child’s Play” horror franchise after the events of “Cult of Chucky”, with Brad Dourif returning once again to lend his voice to the killer good-natured doll. The series’ cast also included Zackary Arthur, Björgvin Arnarson, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Jennifer Tilly, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, Devon Sawa, Lachlan Watson and Fiona Dourif.
The series was produced by UCP and executive produced by Mancini, Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, David Kirschner, and Jeff Renfoe.
Chucky has been popular among fans and critics. NBCUniversal claims that the first half of season 3 was the most-watched season of any USA/Syfy series since 2021 in the adults 18-49 demo, and the number one series for both networks in key demos.
Mancini has participated in nearly every Child’s Play film to date, except for the 2019 film reboot, co-writing the screenplay for the original film and writing the screenplays for six others in addition to the TV series. Brad Dourif, for example, lent his voice to Chucky in all films except the reboot. Dourif recently stated that he is mostly retired, with the exception of Chucky-related projects.
With Chucky no longer available, Syfy is currently left with two scripted series: The Ark and Surreal Estate. The network is currently prepping an Image Comics adaptation “Revival”, with the lead cast recently announced. Meanwhile, USA Network is working on adapting John Grisham’s The Rainmaker to series, with Syfy’s series Resident Alien instead set to air on USA Network starting with its fourth season.
