If you have kids at home, you’ll want to enable parental controls. Deadpool & Wolverine is sending shockwaves through the streaming market after a huge summer box office success.
The R-rated Marvel sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their comic book alter egos, will be available to rent/purchase on digital platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+ starting October 1. It will also be available on 4K Blu-ray/DVD on October 1. 22.
The digital and physical releases will include dozens of bonus featurettes, including “Finding Madonna: Making the Oner,” in which director Shawn Levy teams up with Reynolds to analyze the historic scene; “Practical Approach: Celebrating the Art of Ray Chan,” a homage to the longtime Marvel collaborator; “Loose Ends: The Legacy Heroes,” in which cast and crew look back on the film’s many great cameos; and, of course, a hilarious gag reel.
The digital release on Prime Video will also include exclusive featurettes such as Deadpool doodles, pros and cons, and fact-checked insider trivia. Meanwhile, the 4K UHD Blu-ray will be released in national SKUs and special limited edition SteelBooks® with exclusive custom artwork and packaging. Fans will get to choose between two SteelBook versions, one spotlighting Deadpool and the other spotlighting Wolverine, in red and yellow.
This summer, the much anticipated Marvel sequel surpassed 2019’s phenomenally successful “Joker” at the global box office with a $1 billion total. It’s noteworthy because it introduces into Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe the comic book characters that were previously licensed to 20th Century Fox. Because devoted fans wanted to see the movie as soon as possible to avoid plot twists, huge appearances, and to witness Hugh Jackman’s gruff mutant Logan come out of retirement, ticket sales for the tentpole were astronomical.
As a “irreverent send-off to Fox’s X-Men movies,” Variety film critic Peter DeBruge describes the movie a “test of Disney standards while giving superhero fans closure on nearly a quarter-century of variable-quality Marvel fare produced across town.”
