Although there aren’t many details available, the project is supposedly a “origin” story that takes place decades before the events of J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot.
Haynes directed Black Mirror’s “USS Callister” episode, which was modelled after a Trek episode.
The screenplay is being written by Seth Grahame-Smith, and Abrams will produce via his Bad Robot firm.
Though it has supposedly been trapped in development hell for years, a fourth Star Trek picture that will include the “Kelvin-Verse” crew introduced in the 2009 film is still being worked on as “the final chapter for this crew.”
Fans will undoubtedly be happy to hear this news, however as far as we know, Matt Shakman left the project to direct Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four revival, thus the movie is still without a director.
Though Shakman’s Trek film would have been a “large tent-pole film,” he believes the universe is better suited to a somewhat smaller budget, according to his comments from his most recent interview on the issue.
It’s been anything but easy sailing for the Enterprise crew, and while main cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg are anticipated to return, nothing is confirmed just yet.
It’s almost a marvel that anything worthwhile is produced. It seems to me that there are varying motivations and perspectives among the people involved. Furthermore, I’m not sure whether or when it will occur. And it would be amazing if all came together once more and we managed to pull it off. If not, our run was fantastic.”
The phrase “different agendas” most likely alludes to the enormous number of concepts that have been entertained over the years for the Star Trek Beyond sequel, as well as the creative teams that have been brought on board.
An initial idea centred on the reunion of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk with his father, who was portrayed by Chris Hemsworth in the 2009 film Star Trek. Quentin Tarantino’s R-rated version was also considered at one point.
