The 2023 Emmy Awards will not telecast in September as scheduled due to the ongoing strike by actors and writers against media giants.
The 75th annual awards were scheduled to air on Fox on September 18. The original date and month are no longer being taken into consideration, according to people close to the programme, but a new date has not yet been decided upon. The TV Academy and Fox, the 2023 broadcaster, are still negotiating the exact date of the rescheduled event. Ideally, the show won’t air until SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America hit deals with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Sixteen of the 25 honours awarded during the 2022 Emmy show went to actors or writers, so if the Television Academy and Fox had remained with the Sept. 18 date, they would have run the risk of playing to a largely empty crowd. An awards event would be covered under the SAG-AFTRA strike regulations that prohibit actors from doing promotions for work produced by firms that are on strike. The host and the presenters, who are very definitely SAG-AFTRA members, also receive writing from WGA writers.
The Emmy Awards haven’t been delayed for more than a decade. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Television Academy and CBS postponed the 2001 ceremony; it broadcast in early November of that year.
