Carol Burnett, 91, became the oldest female comedic actress to be nominated for an Emmy for her performance in Apple TV+’s Palm Royale.
Starring Wednesday were Liza Colon-Zayas (The Bear), Hannah Einbinder (Hucks), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary) and Meryl Streep (Only Murder in the Building).
Dick Van Dyke, 98, currently holds the record for the oldest person to be nominated for a Daytime Emmy. Cecily Tyson was nominated in 2018 for her guest role in How to Get Away with Murder (93 years old), and Ernest Borgnine was nominated in 2009 for his guest role in ER (92 years old).
Burnett herself has been nominated for an Emmy 24 times and has won seven times, including Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Mad About You in 1997. She most recently won in 2023 for producing the special Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter and Love. She was also inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1985.
In Palm Royale, Burnett plays Normal Delacorte, the comatose and ultra-rich aunt of Kristen Wiig’s Maxine. The series also stars Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Laura Dern and Allison Janney, and was nominated for a total of 11 Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Wiig.
The 76th Emmy Awards will air live in September. The awards will air on ABC on the 15th and stream on Hulu the following day. The ceremony will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
