Speculation has been swirling for some time around Apple’s potential entry into the foldable smartphone market. Now, according to the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, there’s fresh insight into what Apple may be planning. Gurman claims that Apple is not only developing a foldable iPhone but is also working on a completely new Pro variant. Both models are reportedly in the pipeline for release in 2027, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. If accurate, this would be the clearest timeline yet for the much-anticipated foldable iPhone – and would give Apple a big moment to unveil a groundbreaking new approach to its iOS ecosystem.
Gurman’s comments about the new Pro version are equally intriguing, though he didn’t offer extensive details. He did suggest the model would be a daring departure from current designs and would prominently feature glass in its construction. Whether this hints at semi-translucent elements or simply a more luxurious glass-centric build remains unclear, but it certainly signals Apple’s ongoing push for innovation in its premium devices.
All of this comes amid the anticipation surrounding the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, expected to launch this year and replace the Plus models in the lineup. While the iPhone 17 Air is already rumored to carry a hefty price tag – potentially upwards of $1,200 – the introduction of even more advanced hardware like a foldable device and a redesigned Pro model may raise pricing to new heights.
Adding to the financial concerns are looming tariffs introduced under President Donald Trump, which CEO Tim Cook has reportedly failed to have revoked. These economic measures have impacted Apple’s stock and may result in cost increases across the entire iPhone range. Although Apple is likely to explore various strategies to cushion the effect, the pricing of future models, especially the foldable and high-end Pro variants, could make them inaccessible for a large number of potential buyers.
