Syttende Mai, or Norway Constitution Day in Norwegian, is the occasion for today’s Doodle. On this day in 1814, Norway became quite possibly the earliest country on the planet to take on its cutting edge constitution formally.
Constitution Day wasn’t consistently celebrated until 1833 when essayist Henrik Wergeland gave a public discourse respecting Norwegian legacy. Since Wergeland became a symbol of Norway’s independence, the day has been celebrated by the people. In honor of Norway’s bright future, the nation began a longstanding tradition of organizing a children’s parade in 1864.
The Norwegian flag is depicted in today’s artwork with a red background and a white outline of a blue cross. During celebrations, citizens don the country’s colors or bright bunads, which are modern versions of folk costumes.
The most famous kids’ parade is in Oslo where school groups walk past the Illustrious Castle as the Imperial Family waves to the group from their overhang.
Gratulerer med dagen, Norge!
