On Thursday, Google made a price increase for its YouTube TV subscription. According to an email sent to subscribers on Thursday, it will increase from $65 to $73 per month beginning in April.
Google’s alternative to cable is YouTube TV. Through an internet connection, it provides access to live TV and cable channels.
In an email to subscribers, the company stated, “As content costs have risen and we continue to invest in the quality of our service, we are updating our price to keep bringing you the best possible service.”
Google’s decision to raise the cost of its over-the-air subscription for cord cutters comes after Disney, Apple, and HBO’s online streaming services have all increased their prices.
YouTube TV got the rights to the NFL’s “Sunday Ticket” package in December. This gives it the ability to sell a bundle of NFL games that don’t air on local TV to subscribers all over the country.
CNBC reported that YouTube will pay approximately $2 billion annually for the package, which had Apple and Disney among several other bidders. Google hasn’t said how much its “Sunday Ticket” bundle will cost, but DirecTV, which used to own it, charged $80 per month for it.
According to the email, Google will also reduce the cost of an add-on to access higher-resolution 4K streams from $20 to $10 per month.
