Gemini has been a feature of the Google (Search) app on iOS since its introduction. With at least one iPhone user discovering a stand-alone “Google Gemini” app on the App Store today that also provides access to Gemini Live, that is about to change.
“Unlock the power of Google AI on your iPhone” is the Gemini symbol that appears on your homescreen when you use this stand-alone app. You have had to activate the Google app and navigate to the “Gemini” tab at the top ever since. As an alternative, you can now access Gemini with just a single press thanks to configurable shortcuts added to the Google app’s homescreen widget in September.
The “Google Gemini” listing indicates that Gemini Live is available. One user who downloaded the Google app demonstrated the voice experience in use, although this is not yet available in the app. As you continue to use your phone, Gemini is utilizing a Live Activity to keep it active.
There has only been one report of this software being available for download by a Filipino user thus far. Google is likely testing in a select countries prior to the wider release, as the App Store listing does not load in the US (“This app is currently not available in your country or region”).
Gemini on the iPhone using the Google app is currently comparable to gemini.google.com in terms of functionality. Google hasn’t, however, changed the user interface to reflect the Android experience. With any luck, this stand-alone app will enable Google to provide updates more quickly. Remember that Google Assistant is a stand-alone Apple app.
