Google Pixel smartphones have suffered from many issues in the past, which have been repeated across different generations of the series.
Aspects such as outdated camera sensors, limited wide-angle cameras, slow loading speeds have been reported, and another issue was the cranky fingerprint sensor.
According to a report from Android Authority, Google appears to have a solution for the upcoming Pixel 9 series with the introduction of an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. The biometric security upgrade is claimed to be rolling out to the entire lineup, including the standard Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and the new Pixel 9 Pro XL.
All of these are equipped with Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 sensor (QFS4008), and the ultrasonic feature is reportedly more durable and powerful than optical sensors. It’s said to be faster, more accurate, and less susceptible to moisture and residue from users’ fingers.
A statement of intent from Google
This addition addresses previous criticisms of the tech giant and the Pixel series in particular. It will have the same technology as Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra going forward, which may be a sign of Google’s intentions.
The company is currently behind Samsung, Apple, and Motorola on the 2024 best-selling mobile phone list, but the company may want to convince the market that it wants to match the quality and performance of its competitors.
Not all Google devices will get the improved features. The Pixel Fold 2 should keep the capacitive sensor on the side.
The timing of the sensor upgrade is likely to coincide with the launch of the Pixel 9 series, scheduled for August 13. This marks an earlier than usual launch for Google as the company seeks to grab a larger share of the smartphone market.
