How Sleeping with Air Conditioning (AC) Affects Your Health

The world is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures rising to extremes. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that humanity is facing an “extreme heat epidemic” due to climate change, with billions of people suffering from deadly heatwaves.

The European Copernicus Network reported that recent temperatures have reached 50 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest day on record around the world.

In such extreme heat, air conditioners (ACs) have become a necessity for peace of mind and comfort. Using an AC can help relieve symptoms, but sleeping for hours with the AC on can have adverse effects on your health.

Health Effects of Sleeping in AC

Dry eyes: Conditioners remove moisture from the air, leaving your eyes dry and itchy and uncomfortable.

Lethargy: Cold temperatures slow down your metabolism and bodily processes, which can lead to fatigue and drowsiness.

Dehydration: Dry air can cause rapid moisture loss, which can lead to dehydration if not compensated by drinking enough water.

Dry or itchy skin: Low humidity can cause the skin to lose moisture, resulting in dryness, flaking, and irritation.

Headaches: Sudden changes in temperature and cold, dry air can cause headaches and sinus congestion.

Respiratory problems: Cold, dry air can irritate the irritate airways, worsening conditions such as asthma and allergies.

Allergies and asthma: Air conditioning systems can contain allergens such as dust, pollen, and mold and cause allergic reactions.
