ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Bangladesh hires a former Indian spinner as a new technical consultant

Shridharan Sriram, a former left-arm spinner for India, has joined the Bangladesh cricket squad as a new technical consultant for the forthcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Shridharan Sriram will be working with the Bangladeshi team for a second time; he previously helped them at the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022. Before heading to India, Bangladesh will play a three-match ODI series against New Zealand.

Khaled Mahmud, the director of the Bangladesh team competing in the Cricket World Cup 2023, was quoted by Cricbuzz as saying, “Yes we have appointed him as technical consultant for the forthcoming World Cup.” On September 27, Shridharan Sriram will go to Guwahati to join the Bangladesh team. At Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh will face Sri Lanka in their first exhibition game.

Sriram will give them a wealth of local expertise that will benefit the Bangladesh team, according to Jalal Yunus, chairman of the BCB’s cricket operations. Yunus said, “We will get a lot of technical support from him. He knows all the wickets in India. He can tell us about the weather conditions too. Very few of our players have played in India, so his input will be quite important.”

When the Bangladesh cricket board chose to use split coaching, Shridharan Sriram served as Bangladesh’s head coach during the T20 World Cup the previous year. Coach for the Test and ODI games was named Russell Domingo. But soon after, the BCB abandoned the idea of divided coaching and chose Chandika Hathurusingha as their new head coach. Sriram led Bangladesh to win in the T20 World Cup 2022.

For six years, Shridharan Sriran served as Australia’s spin consultant. Shortly after leaving Australia, he sided with Bangladesh. Sriram also worked as the batting and spin bowling coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League for one season in 2019. 8 One-Day Internationals were played for India by Sriram, primarily in 2003 and 2004 under Sourav Ganguly. In the brief time he played for his country, he took 9 wickets.
