Apple’s iPhone is now set to integrate with SpaceX-owned Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology, enabling space-powered connectivity, according to a Reuters report citing T-Mobile, a key partner in the initiative. This development marks a significant step in expanding mobile coverage, particularly in remote and underserved areas, by utilizing satellites to provide seamless network access.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX and German telecom giant T-Mobile have already begun trialing the Starlink cellular network after receiving approval from the U.S. last November, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). As part of this initial testing phase, the feature will support “text via satellite” messaging, with voice and data services expected to follow in future updates.
Before the latest iOS 18.3 software update enabled support for iPhones, T-Mobile had initially included a select number of Android devices as eligible for the Starlink network trials. Reports from Bloomberg suggest that Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile had been working behind the scenes to integrate iPhone software with the Starlink system, keeping their collaboration largely under wraps until now.
In October 2024, SpaceX and T-Mobile secured FCC authorization to establish direct satellite-to-cell connections through Starlink technology, ensuring improved mobile coverage in disaster-affected regions such as parts of North Carolina that suffered severe damage from Hurricane Helene. Previously, T-Mobile had restricted Starlink connectivity to specific Samsung models, including the Galaxy Z Fold and S24 series. Meanwhile, Apple has already been leveraging satellite technology through its partnership with Globalstar Inc., allowing users to send emergency SOS texts when outside traditional cellular range.
T-Mobile has now begun onboarding early adopters for a preliminary version of its Starlink-powered service, conducting beta tests to assess performance and user experience. According to some early participants, T-Mobile sent them SMS notifications that said, “You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta.” These days, you can text from almost anyplace using satellite technology. Update to iOS 18.3 to begin enjoying coverage beyond.
With this new capability, iPhone users will find an additional toggle switch within their cellular data settings, enabling them to manage satellite connectivity options. A T-Mobile spokesperson, speaking with Bloomberg, mentioned that the trials will begin with “select optimized smartphones” before expanding to include “the vast majority of modern devices” once the service is fully rolled out.
The beta program has also extended to Android 15 users, allowing those with Google’s latest operating system to access satellite-powered messaging. This broader initiative reflects a major leap toward making global, uninterrupted connectivity a reality, bridging the gaps where traditional cell networks struggle to reach.
