The Japan Times reports that Japan plans to provide a six-month visa for digital nomads by the end of March. According to the Immigration Services Agency, digital nomads need to earn ¥10 million, or $67,556.80 USD, annually in order to be eligible for the visa.
Visitors from 49 nations and territories, including the United States, Australia, and Singapore, will be able to apply for the visa. Japan demands private health insurance for digital nomads in addition to a certain income level. Children and spouses are also permitted to remain in Japan.
Those with a digital nomad visa are not eligible for residency cards in Japan, and their visas cannot be renewed instantly. According to The Japan Times, visa holders can reapply, but only after leaving the nation for a maximum of six months.
According to the U.S. Department of State, American visitors are permitted a 90-day visa-free stay in Japan. Both a valid passport and a ticket out of the country at the end of the 90-day stay are required for passengers to take advantage of this option.
In an effort to boost travel after the COVID-19 outbreak, Japan declared this year that it would introduce a visa specifically for digital nomads. Japan saw its highest number of tourists since 2019 with 25 million last year.
According to the Nomad List’s 2023 study, Tokyo, the country’s capital, is among the locations with the quickest rates of growth for remote work. According to Nomad List, the number of digital nomads in the city increased by 67% between 2018 and 2022.
