Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to score in a men’s European Championship on Tuesday when he scored in the semi-final against France.
The 16-year-old Yamal smashed the ball round the inside of the post in the 21st minute, past French goalkeeper Mike Maignan and into the top left corner.
Yamal is 16 years and 362 days old. The previous youngest scorer was Johan Vonlanthen of Switzerland (18 years and 141 days old), also in Euro 2004 against France. Yamal is also the youngest player to score in a major tournament; he overtook Pele in 1958 (17 years and 239 days old).
At the start of the tournament, Yamal became the first teenager to record an assist at a European Championship. He now has three assists, making him the only teenager in the tournament’s history to do so. He is also one of two teenagers (since 1980) to record multiple assists in a European Championship knockout stage match; the other being Türkies Arda Güler.
Four minutes after Yamal’s goal, France defender Jules Koundé slotted the ball into his own net to give Spain a second goal and put them ahead.
