Some user reports seem to indicate that updating macOS to Sonoma 14.4 is breaking some USB hubs that are built into displays, and there doesn’t appear to be a clear fix.
Tuesday, Matt, an AppleInsider reader, notified us that his MacBook’s USB hub stopped working after he updated to macOS Sonoma 14.4. It turns out that this issue isn’t reserved to Matt.
According to the Reddit thread, so far the user seems to have run into this problem with his Dell, Samsung, and his Gigabyte monitors. The issue seems to primarily affect the monitor’s USB hub, but some users have reported that the update has made some monitors completely unresponsive.
There is no solution that seems to work for all users. However, some people have had better luck by completely shutting down and restarting the monitor, or by re-enabling the “Allow to connect accessories” prompt in System Preferences.

- Open Settings
- Click “Privacy & Security”
- Click “Allow Accessories to Connect”
AppleInsider was unable to reproduce the issue on Thunderbolt or USB-C-connected LG and Apple monitors. It appears that isolated hubs are not affected by this issue either. What similarities there are amongst reports is unclear.
If you currently rely on a USB hub for your monitor, it may make sense to wait to update if you haven’t done so already. The update in question was released on March 7th.
