Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market is generating buzz, with reports suggesting the device could carry an eye-watering price tag of around $2,500 (approximately Rs 2,17,500). Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that this premium pricing would place Apple’s first foldable phone significantly above competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which is expected to cost around $600 less.
Leaks surrounding the device suggest it will adopt a book-style design, boasting a crease-free 7.8-inch inner display alongside a 5.5-inch outer screen. When folded, the device is expected to measure between 9-9.5mm, while unfolding will reveal an ultra-thin form factor of just 4.5-4.8mm. The launch timeline currently points to a late 2026 debut, aligning with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s earlier reports that Apple is finalizing development for its first foldable release. Interestingly, Gurman has hinted at another fresh iPhone design in the pipeline for the same year, though specifics remain under wraps.
Renowned display analyst Ross Young has backed the 2026 projection and predicts Apple’s entrance into the foldable segment will reinvigorate the currently sluggish market. He forecasts that Apple’s dominance in the flagship smartphone industry could trigger more than 30% market growth in foldable sales post-launch. Adding to the intrigue, reports suggest Apple’s foldable iPhone may reintroduce Touch ID via a side button, marking a return to the feature amid speculation that Face ID may be omitted due to the device’s slim profile. The phone is expected to sport a dual-lens rear camera system while incorporating premium materials such as a titanium alloy frame and a hinge combining stainless steel and titanium for durability.
Apple’s production schedule indicates that final specifications will be locked in by Q2 2025, with mass production kicking off in Q4 2026. Initial shipments are projected to be limited, ranging between 3-5 million units, given the complexities involved in manufacturing the advanced design. The concept of an Apple foldable has been circulating for years, with patent filings dating back to 2014. Analysts suggest the company is positioning this device as an AI-driven innovation, with Kuo emphasizing that the larger display will enhance AI interactions by supporting multitasking, such as displaying maps while simultaneously engaging with virtual assistants.
