Light Bulb Security Cams: Installation Tips, Light Features, and Night Vision Options

Light bulb security cameras are designed to fit into standard E26 sockets, so compatibility with most fixtures won’t be an issue, though the available space and position are crucial for optimal function. For the camera to work effectively, it needs a socket placed strategically with sufficient space around it and an unobstructed view—avoiding any blockage from walls or fixtures. These cameras often protrude more than a regular bulb, usually around seven inches, so you’ll also need ample room below to ensure a clear sightline.

However, these light bulb cams differ from standard bulbs in terms of lighting; they don’t provide a full 360-degree light radius, instead featuring a directional spotlight. As a result, they aren’t ideal for areas that need complete illumination. Their resolution is another factor to consider, as they’re generally positioned at a higher vantage point, capturing a broad view. Models with at least 2K resolution—often translating to 1080p or higher—are recommended to maintain image clarity from such distances.

Motion detection is essential for monitoring movement around the vicinity, with some models offering basic human detection to reduce false alerts, although they lack the advanced object recognition found in other security cameras. Regarding video storage, many of these cameras support local storage with a microSD card that users can purchase separately. Local storage is typically preferable, as cloud storage services associated with light bulb cameras haven’t established the same reliability or track record as more prominent brands.

Light bulb cameras usually include small spotlights that are activated by motion detection, but they don’t reach the brightness levels of dedicated spotlight cameras. While often limited to a few hundred lumens, choosing one with adjustable brightness and a higher lumen output is beneficial. Night vision capabilities are an important feature as well, with options that ideally go beyond simply turning on the light, ensuring visibility even in low light.
