Maria Bello has been tapped to star in Netflix’s upcoming drama series, The Waterfront.
Kevin Williamson’s eight-part series was originally greenlit by Netflix in May. Bello is the second cast member confirmed to join the series, alongside Holt McCallany.
According to the official logline, The Waterfront is inspired by true events and “dives into the flawed Buckley family as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat.”
Bello will play the role of Mae Buckley. Mae is described as “A complex woman who’s married to Harlan (McCallany) and the mother of their two children. After her husband took a step back from the family business, together with their son, she has been running the fishery in very questionable ways in a desperate attempt to save the family.”
This will be Bello’s second television role with Netflix. She previously starred in the streamer’s hit series Beef, for which she was nominated for an Emmy. She has also appeared in series such as NCIS and Goliath. She is best known for her film roles, appearing in films such as “A History of Violence,” “The Cooler,” “Thank You for Smoking,” “Prisoners,” and “Coyote Ugly.”
She is represented by Independent Artists Group and Agency Adequate.
Williamson is the writer of “The Waterfront,” and he and Ben Fast are executive producers under the Outer Banks Entertainment banner. The studio is Universal Television, and Outer Banks is currently under an overall deal with UTV.
