Several Meta users have expressed frustration on social media over the automatic addition of “Made with AI” labels to their posts by the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. This concern arises even when posts were predominantly crafted by humans or without the use of generative AI models.
For instance, a cosplay artist recently shared a photo of their creation, clarifying that a photographer had only adjusted the colors, yet they were unable to remove the “Made with AI” credit. Similarly, another artist complained that their meticulously pixel-based digital artwork was also labeled as AI-generated.
Speculations among users suggest that Adobe’s GenAI tools might be triggering these designations, although there has been no official confirmation. Nonetheless, a post titled “Meta tags images as ‘Made with AI’ if You Use Gen Fill” on the Adobe Community forum has contributed to these discussions.
Despite Meta providing options for users to voluntarily mark their creations as AI-generated, the company has indicated that advancements in GenAI technologies will lead to more posts being automatically labeled as AI-enabled.
In April this year, a Meta representative mentioned on the company blog that their “Made with AI” labels are applied to AI-generated video, audio, and images based on industry-recognized AI signals or user disclosures of uploading AI-generated content.
The nature of these automatic “Made with AI” labels – whether they constitute a new feature, a default toggle option, or a technical glitch – remains unclear at this time. Similarly, when users tap on the “Made with AI” label on an Instagram post, a notice appears stating that GenAI “may have been used to create or edit content in this post.”
As Meta continues to navigate user feedback and technological advancements in AI, the handling of AI attribution and its impact on creative expression on its platforms will likely remain a topic of ongoing scrutiny and discussion.
