Patrick Beverley, a guard with the Minnesota Timberwolves, has agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract deal, according to his agent Kevin Bradbury of Rep1 Basketball.
Beverley was in the third year of a three-year, $40 million contract, but the new deal will keep him in the league until 2022-2023.
Beverley has had a huge impact on the Timberwolves’ climb into Western Conference playoff contention since joining the team in an offseason trade. In 26 minutes a game, Beverley, 33, has averaged nine points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.1 steals for Minnesota.
His toughness and leadership are valued by the club as important components of the youthful roster’s development this season. The Timberwolves are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference with a record of 30-27.
Beverley has appeared in 59 postseason games in his career, including 31 with the Los Angeles Clippers in the last three years. The Timberwolves are depending on his postseason performance and previous experience to have an impact on his youthful teammates.
With the arrangement, the Timberwolves avoid losing Beverley to free agency this summer. Before extending Beverley, Minnesota had $107 million in salary committed for 2022-2023, and they are expected to be without salary cap space for free agency. The team can still take advantage of a $10 million mid-level exception to stay under the estimated luxury tax of $147 million.
Beverley was acquired in an offseason trade from the Memphis Grizzlies, where he had spent the previous four seasons after being moved by the Los Angeles Clippers. After five seasons with the Houston Rockets, Beverley joined the Clippers in 2017.
