Former Huskies continue to have a significant influence at the next level, even as the UConn Huskies continue to electrify collegiate basketball (see Madison Square Garden this past Saturday).
In fact, it is increasingly likely that a former Huskies guard will win the next NBA Rookie of the Year trophy.
Stephon Castle, a rookie for the San Antonio Spurs, has performed admirably thus far this season. Since he began playing for the Spurs in early November, the 20-year-old two-way sensation has established himself as their second-best player.
Castle’s exceptional strength and athleticism, together with his high basketball IQ, have enabled him to enter NBA games and influence the outcome on both sides. Chris Paul, Castle’s future Hall of Fame teammate, has expressed his admiration for the youngster in the media. LeBron James and Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich also praised Castle.
Additionally, Castle is now the clear favorite to earn Rookie of the Year after Philadelphia 76ers shooter Jared McCain appeared to be the clear favorite to win the honor due to his season-ending injury.
Basketball analyst Adam Zagoria reports that Jaylen Wells (Memphis Grizzlies), Zaccharie Risacher (Atlanta Hawks), and Dalton Knecht (Los Angeles Lakers) are other contenders with a chance.
With 25 games played so far this season, Castle is averaging 15.5 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per 36 minutes for the Spurs.
