Quinn Mathews, Stanford’s starting pitcher, had a strong performance on Sunday. Mathews threw a career-high 156 pitches and struck out 16 pitches in the NCAA Super Regionals’ 8-3 victory over Texas.
Mathews, who has a roger that record on the season, has tossed no less than 100 pitches 15 of his 17 starts. In this game, he permitted three sudden spikes in demand for eight hits and strolled only one hitter as the Cardinal tied the best-of-three Very Provincial series at one game each.
After Mathews allowed Jared Thomas, a first baseman, to score on an RBI triple, the Longhorns took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Dylan Campbell, a right fielder, scored Thomas with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
However, Stanford took a 5-2 lead by scoring one run in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning. Drew Bowser, a second baseman, hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to cap the outburst.
Stanford got the win thanks to Mathews, who pitched the final five innings and struck out eight batters while giving up just one run on three hits. In the seventh inning, shortstop Mitchell Daly hit a solo home run, scoring the only run.
In the upcoming MLB Draft in 2023, Mathews is regarded as a top prospect. The left-handed pitcher is ranked 119th in MLB.com’s prospects rankings.
