The “Squid Game” is making a comeback.
The highly successful South Korean show has been renewed for a second season, according to Netflix.
In a letter to fans, director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “And now, Gi-hun returns.” “The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming .”
“Squid Game” is a fictional South Korean drama in which participants in desperate need of money compete in hazardous children’s games in order to earn cash rewards.
The main character in “Squid Game,” Seong Gi-hun, is a divorced gambler who entered the competition for the large prize.
In the second season, Hwang announced new characters and plot developments.
He wrote, “The man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” referring to the mysterious salesman who attracts desperate game show contestants.
The letter also stated that fans will meet Cheol-su, the “boyfriend” of Young-hee, the show’s infamous robotic doll.
In October, Netflix told CNN that “Squid Game” was the company’s “biggest-ever series at launch.” It is the first Korean series on the platform to reach No. 1 in the United States, with 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the first 28 days after its premiere.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,” Hwang said in the letter. “But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular series ever.”
Last year, Hwang confirmed that the show would return for a second season.
“There’s been so much demand, love and attention for a season two,” he said. “So I feel I have no choice but to make a season two.”
