Netflix Announces ‘Minecraft’ Animated Series with Brand-New Characters

Netflix is developing an animated series based on the wildly popular sandbox video game Minecraft. The streamer will produce the project in collaboration with Mojang Studios, the game’s Swedish developer.

Netflix says that the show “will feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of ‘Minecraft’ in a new light,” while plot specifics are still unknown.

The show is being developed by WildBrain, a Canadian firm that has worked on animated Netflix shows like “Sonic Prime,” “Ninjago: Dragons Rising,” and “Carmen Sandiego.” The show will be CG-animated. WildBrain’s “Johnny Test,” which aired on the WB and Cartoon Network for six seasons between 2005 and 2014, made a comeback on Netflix in 2022. Additionally, the studio created “Fireman Sam” for Channel 5 in the UK and “The Snoopy Show” and “Snoopy in Space” for Apple TV+.

Mojang released Minecraft in 2011. The game allows players to build 3D worlds out of colorful blocks in its signature pixelated style. More than 140 million people play Minecraft every month, spawning spinoffs Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends.

This isn’t the only story adaptation Minecraft is being worked on by Mojang. Microsoft also released a film backed by Warner Bros. and Legendary. The film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers, and is directed by Jared Hess. The film is set to premiere on April 4, 2025.

The news about the Netflix series was announced amid Mojang’s celebration of the 15th anniversary of the first “Minecraft” game.
